Titan releases Star Trek Comic!

So, today’s Sunday Mirror (a newspaper I would ordinarily go nowhere near) had a free special edition of Star Trek Magazine from Titan Magazines. A 16-page “taster” issue, including what I imagine are interviews from the real issue 145, the Movie Souvenir Special.

However, the major surprise came on the back cover. As well as the advertisment for Star Trek Magazine, the back cover includes the first announcement of Star Trek Comic, a new release from Titan! This is the first I’ve heard of this release – and it is a bit of a surprise.

The bumper first issue is apparently out now (although I didn’t spot it anywhere after looking around for Trek merchandise on Friday afternoon after the film), and is 68 pages (I presume future issues will be 32 pages or similar). The issue features the first two issues of the film prequel Countdown, as well as various other features, and film stickers. Obviously, it is intended for a younger audience, but I shall be picking it up as soon as I locate it!

This appears to be a UK-only release, as Titan’s US website has no comics section.

More information can be found at Titan’s official website here.

Review – “Do Not Close Your Eyes”

Posted by Michael Warren on December 6, 2008

It has been said that history moves with the speed of a bullet…

The first issue of IDW Publishing’s latest Star Trek comic series came out two weeks ago. Falling under the Myriad Universes banner of alternate history stories, Star Trek: The Last Generation sees a devastated Earth under Klingon rule, after a single person in the wrong place at the wrong time leads history to take a decidedly different course.

So, how was it? Find out inside…

Dusting off and catching up…

Posted by Michael Warren on December 2, 2008

I doubt anybody’s still checking back on this place, but… here goes.

Yes, I have returned. Sort of. Sorry for the exceptionally long hiatus – even I wasn’t planning on it running this long.

And, I’ve missed a ton of stuff. Well, I haven’t missed it, but I haven’t commented on it. Things like: the new Enterprise, the new trailer, Gods of Night, Mere Mortals, David Tennant’s departure from Doctor Who, new Red Dwarf on the horizon. So, I may have to reach back and bring forth those things, and others, for comment (better late than never, hey?)

But, to start off with, I give you the cover for Scott Pilgrim vs. the Universe. Image via The Beat.

Column – IDW Month-to-Month Sales July 2008

Posted by Michael Warren on August 19, 2008

One of the (many) things I do over at Memory Alpha is update the sales figures for IDW’s Star Trek line each month, when the estimated numbers are released. Taking my cue from the work of Paul O’Brien and Marc-Oliver Frisch over at the comics blog The Beat, I thought it might be interesting to cover them here, as well. I also decided to follow the format they have established for similar articles covering Marvel, DC and other publishers (because IDW releases usually fall outside the top 100, they don’t typically cover those).

So, here we go. Each release will contain the estimated sales figures from ICv2 and Diamond Comic Distributors, along with the percentage drop from the previous issue, as well as some commentary on the figures, and the title, from myself. The number(s) before the series titles represent their position on the ICv2 chart, which catalogues the top 300 comics each month.

In July, with three of the four ongoing series receiving two issue releases this month, it was a pretty full pull list for Trek comic readers. As is now typically the case, one series comes to an end, with another starting up on its tail.

Days of Trek Past

Posted by Michael Warren on August 8, 2008

Star Trek: The Last Generation is a new IDW miniseries coming up for release in November. It ties into Pocket’s Myriad Universes range, and is another alternate timeline story.

Yesterday, the editor, Chris Ryall, posted what will be the variant cover for #1. And it’s a wonderful homage:

(In case you don’t know, it’s a direct copy of the cover of The Uncanny X-Men #141, the first part of the iconic “Days of Future Past” story.)

Basically, the premise is that Kirk fails to save the Federation President at the end of The Undiscovered Country, and the Klingons declare war on the Federation, eventually conquering Earth. The story picks up seventy years later…
