Playmates Toys 6″ Kirk – first look!

Posted by Michael Warren on January 17, 2009

As you may or may not know, Playmates Toys bought the rights to produce toys based on the new Star Trek movie. Playmates used to make toys based on the various series back in the 1990s, and I was a huge fan of them, until they started going wacky with the figure sizes and the exclusives.

Anyway, I was trying to find a new source for info on the old figures (to work on the article on Memory Alpha linked above) – since the one I had was on AOL’s homepage service, which was wiped off the face of the planet back in November – when I stumbled across a brand-new piece of news.

This was a surprise to me too.

This is the first look at the new 6″ figure of Kirk from the new movie.

I quite like it. The sculpt looks about as right as you’re going to get at this level – action figure, rather than collectible, remember. The uniform is a little funny – it looks a little like he’s wearing yellow chainmail…

Plus, there’s a look at the new phaser! It’s a very vague look, mind you, but it does seem to retain some of the sensibilities of the TOS phaser, and it also reminds me of the assault phaser from The Undiscovered Country.

You can see the image of the figure from the link below as well. Watermarked image below the cut. Read the rest of this entry »
